Overview

What this actually is

A Systematic Investment Plan is simply a standing instruction: a fixed amount moves from your bank account into a chosen mutual fund on the same date every month.

Because you invest the same rupee amount regardless of price, you buy more units when markets fall and fewer when they rise. Over a long horizon this removes the need to time the market — which is the single hardest thing for any investor to do well.

It is the most common starting point for a first-time investor, and it stays useful at every level of wealth.

Why consider it

What it does well

  • Start small — ₹500 a month is enough to begin.
  • Removes market timing from the decision entirely.
  • Auto-debit means the discipline is automatic, not a monthly act of willpower.
  • Open-ended funds can be paused, increased or redeemed without penalty.
  • Long horizons let compounding do most of the work.

How it works

Four steps, start to review

  1. Understand

We map the goal, the date you need the money, and how much volatility you can genuinely live with.

  2. Select

We shortlist funds that fit that horizon and risk level, and explain why each one is on the list.

  3. Start

Digital KYC and a bank mandate. The first instalment is usually debited within days.

  4. Review

We check progress against the goal, not against last quarter's chart, and rebalance annually.

Who is this for

You might be a fit if…

If none of these describe you, that is useful information too — tell us on the call and we will point you somewhere more suitable.

  • First-time investors who want to start without a large lump sum
  • Salaried professionals investing a fixed share of monthly income
  • Parents building toward a specific, dated goal such as education
  • Anyone who has tried to time the market and would rather not

Risks & considerations

  • Returns are not fixed or assured. Equity SIPs can and do show losses over short periods.
  • A SIP reduces timing risk but does not remove market risk — a falling market lowers the value of units already bought.
  • Stopping a SIP during a market decline converts a paper loss into a realised one, which is the most common way investors lose money in SIPs.
  • Equity funds need a long horizon. Money you may need within three years generally does not belong in one.
  • Exit loads and capital gains tax apply on redemption depending on the fund and holding period.

Questions

About Systematic Investment Plan

What happens if I miss a month?

Nothing punitive. The bank may levy a mandate-failure charge, but the SIP itself continues and the missed instalment is simply not invested. Repeated misses will affect your goal, so tell us early if the amount needs reducing.

Can I stop or change the amount later?

Yes. Open-ended SIPs can be paused, increased, reduced or stopped at any time without penalty from the fund. ELSS funds are the exception — each instalment is locked in for three years from its own investment date.

Is a SIP safer than investing a lump sum?

It spreads your entry across many price points, which reduces the risk of investing everything at a peak. It does not make the underlying fund any less volatile. A SIP into an equity fund is still an equity investment.
